One of the main reasons that parents choose washable cloth nappies for their baby is to reduce their child’s exposure to potentially toxic chemicals. When you choose organic cotton nappies, you are eliminating the chemicals even further by choosing a material that has been grown and treated naturally, without all of the additive and chemicals that are so common today.

The Benefits of Organic

If you use cloth nappies, then you know that more absorbent varieties are the best choice. Organic cotton nappies are often far more absorbent than regular cotton cloth nappies, making them the best choice for overnights and for heavy wetters. Organic cotton is a little bit more costly than other materials, but it will last for many years to come, making it well worth the initial investment.

Organic cotton nappies are also free of chemical dyes, giving you an option for cloth nappies that is very good for baby’s skin. Some babies are very sensitive, and get rashes from dyes and other chemicals. In fact, you may also want to choose organic detergents and organic nappy cream for baby to avoid chemicals all together.

The Ease of Cloth

One of the most common myths about organic cotton nappies is that they are too much work to use. The reality is that cloth nappies are no more work than using disposables, and can even be a fun way to dress baby up and enjoy him or her while they are still babies. Your organic cotton nappies can last through several children, so your initial investment will go down significantly if you have more than one child, as well.

Organic cotton nappies can be washed the same was as you would wash your other nappies. Most people prefer to use a detergent that is good for their nappies, their baby, and the environment. Look for detergents that are soap free and that do not contain optical brighteners if you want to care for your nappies properly. If you have multi-sized nappies, you can also choose a neutral color to allow for resell once you baby grows out of nappies. Organic cotton is one of the materials that retain a higher resell value, so you can get some money back on your investment in cloth.

The Environment

As parents, it is our responsibility to do everything we can for the environment that our children and grandchildren are inheriting. Organic cotton nappies don’t contain pesticides or other chemicals that are harmful to the environment. Going green also includes looking for more natural choices wherever we can, and organic cloth is a great place to start since the nappies will be close to your baby for at least two years.

When purchasing your organic cotton nappies, remember to look for the nappies in the style that you like best. Today, you can find organic versions of all the different types of nappies, including pocket and all in one nappies. Your baby’s health is the most important thing, and organic is just one step in the right direction.

Washable nappies are a great way to care for your baby. Cloth nappies are good for the environment, good for your wallet, and the best choice for your baby’s skin. These tips will help you find and choose the best nappies for your lifestyle and budget, without sacrificing convenience.

Styles of Nappies

Washable nappies come in a wide variety of styles. You may initially feel overwhelmed with the many different choices available, but that doesn’t mean you need to give up. All you need to is start out simple, then work your way into trying the different styles available. One of the most convenient types of nappies available is the all in one nappy. This nappy works just like a disposable, except you can wash it after using it.

If you don’t know which type of nappy to try first, then look online for a trial pack. Some companies provide a package of different styles of washable nappies for one low price, so you can try them at home. You can also find nappies for sale on forums, giving you access to excellent used nappies that you can purchase for a fraction of the cost to try at home until you find the styles and brands that you like best.

Go For Simple

If you want to buy washable nappies to save money, then look for prefolds or flats, commonly called terry squares. These nappies are very inexpensive to use and can last for many years to come. Generally, flats are the best option if you want a cheap nappy that works well because they fit babies of all sizes, from birth to toddler. You can easily build a nappy stash of covers, prefolds and flats for less than $200 total to last your baby until potty learning.

When shopping, don’t forget the accessories that you need. Nappy pins and covers are a must have when using a simple stash of prefolds and terry squares. You will also need to have a wet bag, which is a water proof bag that you can carry nappies in, for outings and for storing the nappies until wash day. Some parents also use cloth nappy laundry detergent and cloth wipes, as well.

How Many Do I Need?

For the average wetter, you will need about twenty five washable nappies. This will allow for washing every other day, and give you a couple to spare in case you can’t wash right away. Many cloth nappy users find that a wide selection of cloth nappies is a good choice, since there are different times when a certain type of nappy works better.

For example, if your baby has a rash you may find that an airy, loose fitting prefold or flat allows the rash to heal quickly. When out and about, you may find an all in one washable nappy is an excellent choice since it is more absorbent than a prefold. Take your time, and try the nappies out over the course of a few months to find the perfect style for you and your baby.

Swim nappies are reusable and can be a great thing to have in the warmer months of the year, when your family will be spending time at the ocean or pool. Most public spaces require that your baby wear a swim nappy anytime they enter the water to reduce water borne illnesses.

How They Work

Swim nappies work by holding solids in, while keeping water from being absorbed into the nappy. You never want to use a disposable nappy in the water, because the nappy will come apart and can damage the filtration systems in pools. Plus, disposable nappies simply don’t hold the solids in once wet. The outer cover of a reusable swim nappy is waterproof, while the inner is soft and comfy for baby. You can wash a swim nappy just as you would other cloth nappies, and then allow it to air dry.

You do need to purchase swim nappies according to your baby’s weight. Generally, two or three swimming nappies are enough for even the most avid campers and swimmers. Remember to rinse your nappies thoroughly after swimming in pools, which have chemicals that can be bad for baby’s skin and for the waterproof cover of your nappy.

Types of Swim Nappies

Swimming nappies are available in a wide range of styles and colors. Reusable swim nappies can be purchased in bright, bold colors and designs for both boys and girls. The wrap style of nappy uses hook and loop tape, like Velcro, to ensure the proper fit. There are also nappies that use snaps, as well, and those that simply pull on. The style that you choose will depend on your baby’s age.

A wrap styled swim nappy works well for babies of all ages, but older babies may prefer pull on swimming nappies if they are at the age for potty learning. Pull on nappies have the look and feel of training pants, so your toddler doesn’t feel like he is wearing a nappy again. There are nappies for babies of all sizes.

Swimming with Babies

It is important to use swimming nappies anytime that you are in a public place. Many pools have rules that children under the age of three must always wear a swim nappy in the water. The nappy helps to reduce contamination from waste, which can make other sick if your baby has had illness. Swim nappies do reduce the chance of leaks, but remember not to swim in a pool if your child is currently sick, because of the chance of passing the illness through the water.

Swim nappies are also a stylish way to show off your cloth nappies. Parents who choose to use reusable cloth nappies can share their experience with other parents who notice your child’s cute nappy. Not only will you be sharing information on cloth, your baby will have the cutest and often most unique swim nappy at the pool this season.

One of the many choices that you need to make when choosing cloth nappies is the type of material that you want next to your baby’s sensitive skin. Of all the materials available, terry toweling nappies and flannelette nappies are among the most popular for prefolds and flat styled nappies. There are several advantages to each of these materials.

The Basics of Terry Nappies

Terry nappies, or square flat nappies, are an easy nappy to wash and care for. The terry material is inexpensive, but holds in leaks exceptionally well. The nappy does require folding, as well as a waterproof nappy cover. You will also need nappy pins or another way to secure the nappy if you aren’t using a pad fold in the cover.

Terry toweling nappies are one of the most traditional nappies. The material is safe for babies, even those with very sensitive skin and you really only need one size to last from birth through potty learning. Terry nappies also come in a wide range of colors and prints, so they are just as cute as they are economical. Terry toweling nappies are a natural choice when you have a baby and aren’t sure which nappies are right for you.

The Basics of Flannelette Nappies

Flannelette nappies are similar to terry nappies since they need a waterproof cover, but the material is very different. Flannelette is thinner and lighter than terry, making it a good choice in warmer temperatures. Flannelette square nappies are also an economical choice that is available in many different styles and colors. In general, both terry and flannel are materials that hold up well allowing the nappies to be used on several babies before needing to be replaced.

One advantage to choosing flannelette nappies over terry toweling nappies is that flannel is trimmer, making it better for smaller babies who don’t need a lot of bulk to stay dry. Both flannel and terry nappies need to be changed as soon as baby feels damp, but remember that terry toweling nappies will typically hold more moisture than flannel does.

Choosing Your Nappies

It is a good idea to have some classic terry toweling nappies on hand so that you can use them as needed. Not only are these nappies good for baby, they are also great to use for burp cloths and to lay baby on any time they have a rash, so that the air can help the rash heal quickly. Flannel nappies are amazing for newborns and smaller babies, as well, and since both types of nappies are so economical you may want to grab a dozen of each type to decide which kind you personally prefer.

There are many different advantages for choosing either terry nappies or flannelette nappies, but your personal decision should be based on how well each type works on your baby. Since every baby is unique, what works for someone else may not work for your baby. Terry toweling nappies are a classic, however, and are versatile enough to work on babies of all shapes and sizes equally well.

There are several kinds of nappies on the market today, with all in one (also called AIO) and pocket nappies being two of the most popular kinds available. There are some differences between these two styles, and one may not be right for you while the other meets your needs perfectly.

What Is an AIO?

An all in one nappy is one of the modern cloth nappies that are very similar to a disposable nappy. The nappy is made with a layer of absorbent material, generally microfiber, cotton, or bamboo, in between a layer of fleece or suede cloth and an outer layer of FOE or PUL. The materials may vary, but the outer layer is always waterproof, and the inner layer that is next to the baby’s skin should be made to help the baby feel dry longer.

What is a Pocket Nappy?

A pocket nappy is one of the modern cloth nappies that are adjustable for your personal needs. Pocket nappies come with two inserts, one large and one small. The small insert can be used alone for tiny babies, such as newborns, or you can use both inserts for overnights or heavy wetter. You can also customize your nappy by stuffing the pocket with a prefold nappy or a hemp insert, which may be more absorbent than cotton.

Which is Better?

Ultimately, you will be the only one who can determine which of these two types of modern cloth nappies is best. Pocket nappies are great for those who want to adjust their nappies for their baby, while all in ones are an easy, convenient way to use cloth nappies. Many moms purchase AIO nappies just for babysitters and daddies to use while they are away for the day, but find that pocket nappies are best for overnights.

One advantage to pocket nappies is that when you use only one insert, you have a trimmer nappy that fits under clothes easily. Another is that pocket nappies take less time to dry, since the inserts come out of the outer shell of the nappy in the wash. AIO’s, however, don’t need to be stuffed, which does take a few moments once the nappies are washed and dried.

Choosing Your Nappies

You may want to purchase a few AIO’s and pocket nappies to compare on your own before making your final choice. If you line dry, then you may find that AIO’s are simpler to hang, while pocket nappies dry in less time. Both nappies have the advantage of being simple to use and easy to take on and off of baby. You will find that all in ones and pocket nappies are available in both snaps and aplix, which is like Velcro.

Look for modern cloth nappies with laundry tabs for both pocket and AIO’s to avoid pilling in the wash. Whatever type you choose, know that you have made a positive, healthy choice for your baby and the environment.

When you have a baby, you may find that cloth nappies are an option that you need more information on. Choosing cloth is an option that many people consider not only for the health of their baby, but also for the environment. Researching nappies, reusable and disposable, will provide you with all the information you need to make the best decision for your family.

What Are Cloth Nappies Made From?

The reason that nappies are reusable is that they are made from washable, and often waterproof, materials. If you are thinking of PVC pilchers, then you haven’t seen modern cloth nappies! There are a wide range of breathable waterproof materials on the market today, including super soft FOE and PUL, as well as soft nylon. These materials come in a wide range of colors and styles, giving you access to the cutest and healthiest nappies available.

There are many different reasons why parents choose cloth nappies. Reusable materials that can be washed are better for the environment, and are also much better for baby’s sensitive skin. Natural materials such as cotton and hemp are absorbent and can be purchased in organic styles, so your baby is exposed to fewer chemicals. Cloth nappies are one of the best ways to protect your little ones, as well as protecting the Earth.

Choosing Nappies

One of the reasons that parent tend to use disposable nappies is that there is a common belief that cloth is too complicated. There are quite a few styles on the market, and to any new parent it can be difficult to find a style that works for your family. One resource you have is other parents, who have experience with cloth nappies. Reusable nappies have a large following all around the world, so look for online forums and communities to find valuable information to help you make the best decision.

Cloth nappies have been modernized to be more convenient than ever before, and there are accessories such as nappy sprayers, wet bags, and aplix that make wearing, maintenance, and storage a breeze. You don’t even have to soak dirty nappies. Reusable nappies can simply be stored in a dry pail until wash day, as long as you shake out most of the solid waste. Then, just wash and dry and your nappies are ready to be worn again.

Are Cloth Nappies Really Easy?

Yes, cloth nappies are really easy to use, clean and store. Imagine being able to save up to twenty dollars a week just by choosing cloth nappies. Reusable nappies can be worn anywhere, anytime, just like disposable nappies. You can take your savings and have a family picnic at the park, or go to the zoo.

When you choose cloth, you are giving your baby the best nappies. Reusable nappies are safe for baby’s skin, since they don’t have any extra chemicals that can cause issues. Not only will you be helping the Earth and your wallet, you will also be giving your baby the softest, most comfortable, safest nappy possible.

If you use reusable nappies, then you may have found that traditional laundry soaps are less than ideal for washing nappies. There are also many who need to add an extra rinse, add vinegar, or even use unscented detergents to protect their baby’s sensitive skin. These tips will help you find the perfect wash routine for your nappies.

Your Wash Routine

The first step to having a good wash routine for your reusable nappies is to rinse your nappies thoroughly, making sure you have dumped all the solid waste out of the nappy before throwing in the machine. The exception is when you have an exclusively breastfed baby. You don’t need to dump your nappies if you baby only eats breast milk, since the first rinse will remove all the solids easily.

You typically do not need to add anything to the first rinse. The actual wash is the next step to cleaning your reusable nappies. In this step, you can add oxygen cleaner if you have stains, as well as your detergent. It is always recommended that you use a detergent specifically made for cloth nappies, although you can also make your own detergent if you wish. If you have been having problems with rough nappies, then you should add vinegar to the last rinse. You can also add essential oils at this time if you want some scent in your nappies.

Your Detergent

Even though you may not believe it, the type of detergent you use on your reusable nappies has a huge impact on the absorbency and smell of your nappies. If you have been having problems keeping your nappies fresh smelling, then you will want to consider stripping your nappies. To strip your nappies means to take out all of the detergent build up, so the nappy is just like new. You can strip using hot water washes and dishwashing detergent.

To begin stripping your reusable nappies, start a hot wash and add a small squirt of dishwashing detergent. Then you need to wash until you no longer see bubbles in the wash and dry as usual. Make sure that the detergent you use is free of scents, optical brighteners, and other chemical additives for the best smelling, cleanest nappies. You can find a wide array of environmentally friendly detergents made just for cloth nappies.

Do I Need that Extra Rinse?

Another of the most common problems that cause build up and stink in reusable nappies is simply not using enough water. That one extra rinse really does matter, and can completely change the look and smell of your nappies for a cleaner and more desirable outcome. Also, make sure you aren’t overloading the washing machine. About 15 nappies makes a large load and anything more will reduce the amount of water flowing through the nappies.

Finding the perfect wash routine for your cloth nappies takes some research, but with these tips it is possible to clean your nappies perfectly every time you wash.

There are several types of reusable nappies available, allowing you to find the styles that fit into your lifestyle best. Choosing the right nappy can be confusing, so you will want to know what each type is before you begin shopping, however.

Basic Styles

The simplest and often least costly type of nappy is the terry flat or the prefold. Both of these styles require pins for use, as well as a nappy cover. Prefolds are generally made from cotton, and have an inner absorbent core. Prefolds are a good choice if you are looking for a nappy that is easy to use and inexpensive.

Flats are less costly than even prefolds, and also require pins and a cover. Modern reusable diapers can be made from a variety of materials, including bamboo, flannel, and cotton as well as traditional terry. Flats are very easy to care for and are one of the most economical of all reusable nappies.

Fitted Nappies

Fitted nappies are one of the most popular styles of reusable nappies. These nappies are made with a soft outer layer, and an absorbent inner core. Materials used for fitted nappies can include bamboo, cotton, terry, and minkee. You may have a snap in soaker, which is used to help the nappy become more absorbent, as well. Fitted nappies are so popular because they come in many styles and prints, but you still need a cover for a fitted nappy.

All in Ones and All in Twos

Another popular style of reusable nappies is all in ones. All in one nappies are just like disposables, except for the fact that you wash them. All in ones come in two different styles: Sized and multi-size. Multi-size nappies are an excellent choice if you want your nappies t fit your baby from birth to around age two. Sized nappies are available in extra small or newborn, small, medium, large and extra large. The sized nappies provide an excellent fit as your baby grows.

All in twos are an excellent choice if you prefer to have reusable nappies on hand that allow you to alter the absorbency. Pocket nappies are an example of an all in two nappies. Pocket nappies generally have two inserts, a large and a small insert. You can use the large and small inserts together for overnights, and either insert during the day when you will be changing the nappy more often. Nappies with snap in soakers are also all in two nappies.

How to Use

When deciding which of the many types of reusable nappies is right for your family, it is easy to be overwhelmed by the choices. It is an excellent idea to simply purchase one of each, or rent your nappies through a nappy trial pack. You may find that what your friends love your baby can’t tolerate. Take your time, and try the nappies as you can. There is no rush, and when you finally find the nappy you love you can make your stash complete.

Cloth nappies are an excellent choice for your babies. There are many nappies that require folding, such as prefolds and flats. These types of nappies are very economical, and very simple to use once you have the hang of folding cloth nappies. There are several easy and efficient folds that you can use quickly once your baby has became too wiggly for complicated folds, or to use when you are too busy to fold your prefolds and flats ahead of time.

The Jelly Roll

The jelly roll fold is very easy to do. All you need to do is simply put the prefold under the baby’s bottom, and then roll the sides inwards so that a side gusset forms. Roll the sides of the nappy in until the nappy fits your baby perfectly, then pin or secure as normal. If you have a tiny baby, then you may find that folding the nappy inward until it is under the belly button provides a better fit.

Another simple solution to folding cloth nappies is to lay your nappy under the baby, then fold the sides of the prefold in to create a central panel. This will increase absorbency as well as allowing for a better fit. Folding the nappy in, so that the top is even with or below the belly button is the key to creating a trim nappy.

The Bikini Twist and The Kite Fold

Another way of folding cloth nappies is to take the nappy and lay it under the baby as usual, and twist the nappy to create bulk where it is needed most. Then, secure as normal. If you use flats, then you will want to fold the nappy into a rectangle before using the bikini fold. The most popular fold for terry flats, and other styles of flats, is the kite fold.

The kite fold is simple after you have practiced once or twice, so try this right after taking the nappies out of the dryer or off the line. First, place the nappy on a flat surface, so that the nappy looks like a kite, or in a diamond shape. Then you need to fold in the side corners, and then fold the top corner of the nappy down over the sides. After folding the top corner down, take the nappy and fold the bottom corner so that it is touching the top corner. You now have created a nappy that can be pinned on the baby by folding the three corners in, over the baby.

Quick and Easy Folds

Folding cloth nappies does take just a little practice, so you may want to practice using a doll before your baby arrives, or try folding flats ahead of time. If that just isn’t practical, then you can also simply fold prefolds into thirds and lay them in the nappy cover for a quick fold. You can also fold flats into a rectangle, and then place in a waterproof cover for a quick and easy fold.

Welcome and Congratulations for making the right choice by using Cloth Nappies for your baby!

Before you ask why cloth nappies are the best choice for your little ones. First, you need to acquaint yourself to the various names associated to cloth nappies. Sometimes, you may see washable nappies, cotton nappies, reusable nappies or organic nappies being sold in department stores and infant specialty stores. All these names pertain to only one kind of nappy – cloth nappy.

So, why cloth nappies are best for babies? Well, this type of nappy is made from 100 percent cotton which provides excellent comfort and durability. Nappies can be made from a variety of different fabrics – including bamboo. In fact, your baby can use cloth nappies until they are finished using nappies.

Just a little background about cloth nappies, do you know that it was widely used by parents during the 6Os? Yes, cloth nappies were the only option of parents during that time. It was really popular as it was their only choice of nappy. However, its popularity did not last long because babies were trained to use the toilet early – as early as 6 to 7 months.

In the advent of disposable diapers, cloth nappies lost its track in the market. However, if you will compare the two, cloth nappies can be considered better primarily because they are comfortable and cost-effective. Yes, you can save huge amount of your budget if you use cloth nappies. It is washable and reusable unlike the disposable ones. In effect, you need not to buy packs of disposable nappies for your baby. Another thing, cloth nappies are environment-friendly. Imagine, how much of our environment is being exploited just to bring a pack of disposable nappies in the market? How much chemicals are used to make these nappies? And how much pollutant do these disposable nappies add to the environment? Don’t you think it’s about time to make a sensible choice?

Okay, I understand that you think using disposable nappies is convenient since you just throw them right after use. But what if you forgot to buy a spare pack and there is nothing left from your previous pack? Another good scenario is – what if you cannot find the size for your baby? These things do not only happen to few people. There are many parents who encounter such problems every now and then. Whereas using cloth nappies, gives you peace of mind. They are easy to wash and maintain so nappies are always available for you little one.

If you truly care about your baby’s welfare, you will only use things that are gentle to his delicate body. So, when you want supreme comfort and the best care for your babies, use Cloth Nappies. Because every baby deserves only the best.
