What Are the Different Types of Cloth Nappies Available?
There are several types of reusable nappies available, allowing you to find the styles that fit into your lifestyle best. Choosing the right nappy can be confusing, so you will want to know what each type is before you begin shopping, however.
Basic Styles
The simplest and often least costly type of nappy is the terry flat or the prefold. Both of these styles require pins for use, as well as a nappy cover. Prefolds are generally made from cotton, and have an inner absorbent core. Prefolds are a good choice if you are looking for a nappy that is easy to use and inexpensive.
Flats are less costly than even prefolds, and also require pins and a cover. Modern reusable diapers can be made from a variety of materials, including bamboo, flannel, and cotton as well as traditional terry. Flats are very easy to care for and are one of the most economical of all reusable nappies.
Fitted Nappies
Fitted nappies are one of the most popular styles of reusable nappies. These nappies are made with a soft outer layer, and an absorbent inner core. Materials used for fitted nappies can include bamboo, cotton, terry, and minkee. You may have a snap in soaker, which is used to help the nappy become more absorbent, as well. Fitted nappies are so popular because they come in many styles and prints, but you still need a cover for a fitted nappy.
All in Ones and All in Twos
Another popular style of reusable nappies is all in ones. All in one nappies are just like disposables, except for the fact that you wash them. All in ones come in two different styles: Sized and multi-size. Multi-size nappies are an excellent choice if you want your nappies t fit your baby from birth to around age two. Sized nappies are available in extra small or newborn, small, medium, large and extra large. The sized nappies provide an excellent fit as your baby grows.
All in twos are an excellent choice if you prefer to have reusable nappies on hand that allow you to alter the absorbency. Pocket nappies are an example of an all in two nappies. Pocket nappies generally have two inserts, a large and a small insert. You can use the large and small inserts together for overnights, and either insert during the day when you will be changing the nappy more often. Nappies with snap in soakers are also all in two nappies.
How to Use
When deciding which of the many types of reusable nappies is right for your family, it is easy to be overwhelmed by the choices. It is an excellent idea to simply purchase one of each, or rent your nappies through a nappy trial pack. You may find that what your friends love your baby can’t tolerate. Take your time, and try the nappies as you can. There is no rush, and when you finally find the nappy you love you can make your stash complete.
